Peri-implantitis is an inflammation of the soft tissues around a dental implant, leading to bone loss. Unanswered Questions in Periodontology, An Issue of Dental
(3–5) A consensu report identified the prevalence of peri-implantitis to be 28% to 56% of patients and 12% to 40% of implants. (6) Treatment varies significantly—from nonsurgical therapy with or without adjunctive local-release antibiotics to surgeries that include flap debridement procedures with or without osseous resection and implantoplasty. Peri-implantitis is an increasing problem in implant dentistry. The current series of studies employed a translational approach with the aim to compare peri-implantitis and periodontitis lesions and evaluate the influence of implant surface characteristics and the adjunctive use of systemic antibiotics/local antiseptics on healing following surgical treatment of peri-implantitis. There is an urgent need for randomised clinical trials on the use of antibiotics in the treatment of peri-implantitis. Proper periodontal infection control in dentate patients before implants are installed and frequent supportive implant care represent effective measures to reduce the risk of future infections and their complications around oral implants.
